How to Care for Wool, Mohair, Alpaca, Linen & Cotton Throws

A well-loved throw can stay part of your home for years with thoughtful care. Natural fibers don’t all respond to washing and drying in the same way, so the first rule is simple: follow the care label on your specific piece. Fiber, weave, dyes, and finishing can all affect the right approach.

Before cleaning: check the label and the stain

For a small spill, gently blot with a clean, dry cloth rather than rubbing. Rubbing can work a mark deeper into the fibers or disturb the surface. Check the care instructions before applying water or a cleaning product, and test any approved treatment on an inconspicuous area first.

Wool, merino, alpaca, and cashmere

Many animal-fiber pieces benefit from gentle handling. Some can be hand-washed or washed on a suitable wool cycle, while others call for dry cleaning. Use cool water and a mild detergent only when the label allows it, avoid twisting or wringing, and reshape the item carefully. If the label recommends professional cleaning, follow that advice.

Mohair

Mohair’s soft, lofty surface can be sensitive to rough handling. Follow the label closely; when washing is permitted, use a gentle method and avoid agitation, heat, or wringing. After washing, reshape and dry as directed so the texture can settle naturally.

Linen and cotton

Linen and cotton are often straightforward to care for, but the exact instructions still depend on the weave and construction. If machine washing is allowed, use the temperature and cycle on the label. Avoid assuming high heat is suitable: it may affect size, color, or texture. Dry according to the instructions and remove promptly if you want to reduce creasing.

Drying and storing

When the care label permits, lay delicate or heavier knits flat to dry and keep them away from direct heat. Make sure a blanket is fully dry before storing. Fold rather than hang pieces that may stretch, and store them in a clean, dry place. Between washes, airing a throw and addressing small spills promptly may help keep it fresh.

Choose a piece that fits your routine
